Riders!
My friend Jason writes about Riders of the Purple Sage, a 1912 book by prolific American Western writer Zane Grey. Full text at Gutenberg.
It seems like a rather exciting read, and Jason presents it as: “absolute grist for the Dogs in the Vineyard mill”.
I definitely enjoyed it, but I implore you to keep thinking “1912, 1912…” like a mantra as you read it. Many a pretense has gone out of fashion since then. He actually says “heaving bosom”. More than once. But the story is great and there are some beautiful and striking moments.
